  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter or cooking oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon bouillon powder (or substitute with salt)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and thinly slice the potatoes evenly.

2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter or heat oil. Sauté onion, garlic, and thyme until onion softens.

3. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Drain excess fat.

4. Season with salt, bouillon powder, pepper, paprika, and oregano. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.

5. Gradually add beef broth and milk while stirring to form a thickened sauce.

6. Grease a 9″x13″ baking dish. Layer half the potatoes on the bottom, then half the beef mixture. Repeat layers.

7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes, until potatoes are tender.

8. Remove foil, sprinkle cheddar cheese over top, and bake uncovered for 10–15 more minutes until bubbly and golden.

9. Let rest for 10–15 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

Broil briefly at the end for a crispy cheesy top. Slightly undercook ground beef before baking to avoid dryness. Resting after baking helps the sauce thicken and flavors to meld. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
