French Onion Green Bean Casserole – hands down the BEST green bean casserole! Even our vegetable haters loved this casserole. Only 5 ingredients and loaded with flavor from french onion dip, cheddar cheese, and crispy fried onions.
1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
2. Combine drained green beans, cream of mushroom soup, French onion dip, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, and ½ of the French fried onions.
3. Spread green bean mixture into prepared pan.
4. Bake for 25 minutes.
5. Remove from oven, top with remaining cheese and onions.
6. Bake an additional 5 minutes until bubbly and golden.
I used canned green beans because that is what we prefer. Feel free to substitute an equivalent amount of fresh or frozen green beans — about 3 pounds fresh or 32 oz frozen.
For the French onion dip, use a refrigerated sour cream-based dip such as Kraft, Dean’s, Barber’s, or Heluva Good. Avoid shelf-stable options.
If unavailable, mix a tablespoon or two of onion soup mix into sour cream as a substitute.
Use Unsalted Cream of Mushroom Soup to better control sodium levels.
Can be made in advance and refrigerated overnight before baking — just add a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
This casserole also freezes well. Wrap tightly and freeze. Thaw before baking.
